The students admitted in different schools excel in their classes
One of the ill-fated outcomes of the war on terror besides many other is the alarming increase in the number of orphans. The main battlefield Wana is no exception with hundred of such orphans. Children are more vulnerable to unscrupulous elements of society, and to save them WAWA has approached institutions like Ummah Children Academy where 74 orphans were admitted, 35 orphans in Madina International Peshawar and 36 in Mercy Pak Peshawar. Besides these 150 orphans are given scholarships for their continued education in Wana

“The students admitted in our academy by WAWA are all orphans who lost their dear ones during the war on terror and the trauma & shock had caused them to undergo behavioural changes. We give them psycho-social treatment through recreational programmes and now they are getting better and improving towards normalcy. They are taking part in social activities and games, their grades in education have also improved, rather some of them are securing top positions in their classes. I am sure that one day that will not only bring fame to the institution but also to this country.” Izhar-ul-Haq, Director Academics, Ummah Children Academy, Nowshera.

“We got many deserving students admitted in Mercy Pak School & college through WAWA. These students are showing tremendous results and we are happy by the way they are making progress. Zer Muhammad writes to the COAS
Dear General Kiyani

Longing for peace and security of lives, honour and properties for about 63 years, the tribal people, physically and psychologically traumatized by the recent ‘war on terror’ have been marching in a long and dark tunnel towards the other end anxiously waiting to see the rays of hope. Never in their wildest dream was this ray of hope expected coming from one of the COAS in Pakistan’s history. More than the political elite, you are the one who realized that over the past, tribal people were impaired and now its time that measures should be taken to soothe the wounded.

When I read a headline on 16 Feb 2010 in ‘The Nation’ “Army won't abandon tribals: Gen Kayani”, I know the commitment is by someone who has always honored what he says. Dr Farrukh Saleem writes about you after a recent meeting “Yes, he is complex, complicated and calculating - all in one. Yes, he has the capacity for abstract thought, cold rationality and coarse creativity - all in one…..Hearing what I heard, I can tell you that he is a firm believer in Environmental Determinism - the theory that your environment dictates, and determines, your defense policy…”

Speaking of your firm belief in environmental determination I can see that you applied the same to South Waziristan by the earth-breaking of two main roads of the area: Road Tank-Jandola-Sararogha-Makeen and Road Tank-Khajuri-Tanai-Wana. By doing so you have unchained our hearts and freed our souls. You have talked to our gaping wounds by giving Wana a Cadet College and a number of small dams to South Waziristan.

Poesy will be needed to convey the magnitude of gratefulness of the people of Waziristan, However, I venture this opportunity to thank you on behalf of the people of Wana in specific and South Waziristan in general. We salute you Sir and our coming generations will remember you as their greatest benefactor.

Zer Muhammad Wazir
General Secretary WAWA.

The function started with recitation from the Holy Quran.

Addressing the gathering Mr Abdul Ghafoor of HUMDUM focussed his attention on the present state of women education in FATA. The problems faced by women and teachers in FATA must be solved before hoping for any headway in women education in Fata. He asked the participants that the centuries old Pushtoon traditions biased against women emancipation and education must be discarded. Maulana Abdul Ali General Secretary of JUI-F said that unfortunately discrimination against women in FATA is wrongly sanctioned by the wrong interpretation of Islam. Quoting the example of Hazrat Ayesha and other women in Islamic History he made it clear that Islam laid equal emphasis on the education of women and there is nothing in Quran and the Prophetic tradition which may support the tribal tradition of discrimination against women. He lauded the role of WAWA in spreading social awareness amongst the tribesmen.

Prominent educationist Madam Saira Jabeen Principal WENSAM University College (junior Section) said that mother’s lap is where from a child starts his learning process and if there is darkness of ignorance and illiteracy in that first institution , the future of such child is left to chance. She deplored corruption in the education sector and appealed to the teaching community to deliver honestly.

Mr Aslam Awan, the learned journalist from Daily MASHRIQ was philosophical in his discourse. He said that the tribal society is undergoing a transitional phase and you must be ready for the dawn of new era. You must discard your old traditions .You must accept the change in the winds. If you failed, then change is inevitable, it has to come but the change brought thus by the forces of nature, is very relentless and painful. He appreciated the timing of the seminar and hoped that this seminar will go a long way in help ameliorating the plight of tribal women and will prove the harbinger of new era.

Madam Mehwesh Sabeen prominent social worker and educationist pointed out that it is not only the tribal areas where the women are discriminated against rather in Dera Isamil khan there are 1400 schools in which only 500 are for women where is their population proportion is 50%.

Muhammad Saeed SSP National Highways and Motorway Police pointed out that there are 58 girls primary schools in Wana subdivision but only 4 are functional while the rest are being used as private hujras by the notables. Schools are being sold out by the political administration. Wawa must deliver on this count. He discussed at length the launching of AISHA WAZIR SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION. 20 % of these scholarships are reserved for girl students belonging to Wana subdivision. A handsome amount of PKRS 40000 will be given to these students and the number will increase from the present 5 with passage of time to 30. He specially praised Dr Badshah Jan Wazir for his very sincere efforts .The hall applauded Dr Muhammad Baber and Dr Kishore Kumar Challa of FACC for their valuable contribution.

In his address Dr Farid ullah Vice Chancellor Gomal University besides highlighting the role of Gomal University in promoting education in this area, desired that while educating women, we must accord top priority to our moral values and the teachings of Islam. We cannot afford western education in its totality. He floated the idea of sub campus of Gomal University in South Waziristan Agency and requested WAWA to help him in converting this idea into a reality.
